Need to empty a pool, tank, or aquarium and don't have a water pump handy? Don't worry. There's a foolproof, free method based on pure physics that will allow you to move large quantities of water using only a hose and the force of gravity.
In this step-by-step guide, we explain how to perform the famous siphon effect to transfer liquids easily and safely.
What do you need to get started?
- A flexible hose: Ideally, it should be transparent so you can see the water flow, but any garden hose will do.
- Two containers or levels: The place where you take the water (source) must be higher than the place where you pour it (destination).
- Water (optional): To prime the hose if using the immersion method.
Method 1: The immersion technique (The most hygienic)
This is the recommended method because you don't need to suction with your mouth, avoiding swallowing dirty water or chemicals.
- Coil the entire hose and submerge it completely in the water container you want to empty (e.g., the pool).
- Make sure there are no air bubbles left inside; you'll see that the bubbles stop coming out.
- Cover one end of the hose with your thumb (or bend it) to prevent air from entering.
- Pull that clogged end out of the water and quickly take it to the drain point (which should be lower).
- Release your finger. Gravity will do the rest and the water will start to flow on its own!
Method 2: Manual aspiration (Caution)
If the hose is short and the water is clean, you can use this classic method:
- Insert one end of the hose into the liquid.
- From the outlet end (located at the bottom), suck hard until you see the water rise above the edge of the container.
- Quickly remove the nozzle and place the hose in the bucket or drain before the water reaches the end.
The perfect tool for this job
To perform this process efficiently, you need a hose that won't easily kink or bend, cutting off the water flow. Our professional recommendation is to use high-quality, flat or reinforced hoses.
